Houston: Toyota Center

Toyota Center has anchored downtown Houston’s sports and entertainment scene since opening on October 6, 2003, with a Fleetwood Mac concert christening the arena on its very first night. Home to the NBA’s Houston Rockets, the arena at 1510 Polk Street was built at a cost of roughly $235 million and remains one of the largest and busiest concert venues in the state, holding up to 19,000 fans in full concert configuration.

One of the arena’s most distinctive design features is largely invisible to concertgoers: at the request of then-Rockets owner Leslie Alexander, the building was excavated 32 feet below street level specifically to eliminate the stairs fans would otherwise climb to reach their seats — a project described at the time as the largest excavation in Houston history, removing roughly 31,500 cubic yards of dirt. Architecture firm Populous (formerly HOK Sport) designed the building alongside Houston-based Morris Architects and John Chase Architects.

Beyond basketball, Toyota Center has hosted two NBA All-Star Games (2006 and 2013), major UFC and WWE events, and a steady stream of the biggest touring concerts to pass through Texas, from arena-rock legends to today’s biggest pop and hip-hop headliners. The arena previously served as home ice for the Houston Aeros (AHL) and home court for the Houston Comets (WNBA), with the Comets franchise set to return to the WNBA in 2027.
