The Woodlands: The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion has served as the summer heartbeat of live music in The Woodlands since it opened in 1990, with an opening weekend lineup that featured the Houston Symphony, Frank Sinatra, Alabama, and Clint Black all on the same stage in a matter of days. Named for Cynthia Woods Mitchell, wife of The Woodlands founder George P. Mitchell, the amphitheater at 2005 Lake Robbins Drive has grown into one of the busiest outdoor concert venues in the country by sheer volume of shows staged each year.

The venue holds up to 16,500 fans across a 6,500-seat covered and reserved-seating pavilion plus a sprawling lawn that can hold up to 10,000 more, making it equally suited to an intimate acoustic evening or a full-scale touring rock spectacle. Its distinctive six-peaked roof took a direct hit during Hurricane Ike in September 2008, and the rebuilt structure was specifically engineered to withstand sustained winds of over 175 miles per hour — a rare instance of a concert venue’s architecture being defined as much by storm resilience as by acoustics.

Operated as a non-profit by The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands, the pavilion is also the official summer home of the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, and Houston Ballet, giving it a genuinely rare dual identity as both a major touring-rock amphitheater and a resident home for the city’s classical performing arts institutions. Huntsman Corporation became the venue’s presenting sponsor in 2014, lending its name to the full official title.
