Dallas singer-songwriter Larry Gee ends more than a decade of silence with a new single, “Keep Walking,” out September 11. Larry Gee hasn’t released new music since 2015.
Back then, “Days Like This” felt like the start of something. Instead, the songwriter went quiet for eleven years.
The silence wasn’t a choice. In 2023, doctors diagnosed Gee with advanced kidney disease. The diagnosis led to a kidney transplant in 2025 and a hard-won second chance at life. But surviving didn’t automatically restore his voice as a writer. Gee battled writer’s block for roughly twelve years, the kind of creative freeze that outlasts the crisis that caused it.
Then the National Kidney Foundation called. The organization asked if Gee would write a song for its Kidney Walk initiative, and the request cracked something open. “I had been dealing with writer’s block for probably 12 years,” Gee said in a statement. “When NKF asked if I would be open to writing something, it gave me a reason to sit down and really try again. What surprised me was how naturally it started coming out. I think it was because I wasn’t trying to invent a story. I had lived this story for the last three years.”

Gee didn’t write “Keep Walking” alone. Producer Jordan Richardson and Daniel Hardaway helped shape the song. Adam Pickrell and Becky “Lady Bee” Elias rounded out the sessions. Richardson called the collaboration a career highlight. “Making meaningful art is the pinnacle part of the creative process,” Richardson said, “and the message of positivity that this song garners just takes it over the top.”
An instrumental version will soundtrack the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walk programming this fall. Larry Gee also booked a string of North Texas shows, including an October 16 stop at the State Fair of Texas. Beyond the single, Gee is working with Richardson on new material. He also plans a vinyl compilation of unreleased tracks, The Get Back, meant to follow his 2010 debut, Weekends.
Dallas has buried plenty of musical legends, including Stevie Ray Vaughan, but Larry Gee’s story runs the other direction. After more than a decade of silence, he’s still walking, and now he’s finally saying so out loud.
