$20Tempesst plays Hotel Vegas on Wednesday, October 21, bringing their sun-dazed psych-pop to East Austin. Doors are at 6 PM, with tickets starting around $20.
Tempesst was formed nearly a decade ago by twin brothers Toma and Andy Banjanin, originally from Noosa, Australia, before the band relocated to London and settled in Hackney, where they’ve built a reputation as one of the more inventive acts in the current wave of UK psych and indie-pop. The five-piece — rounded out by Kane Reynolds, Blake Mispieka, and Eric Weber — released their debut full-length, Must Be a Dream, to strong reviews, drawing on layered, retro-leaning production and warm melodic songwriting that nods to ’60s pop without ever feeling like straight pastiche. The album’s dense arrangements have translated into an increasingly ambitious live show as the band has toured further and further from home.
Hotel Vegas has built its reputation as one of East Austin’s scrappiest, most consistently interesting small rooms, mixing touring acts with the neighborhood’s deep well of local talent almost every night of the week. A dreamy, detail-oriented band like Tempesst is a natural fit for a venue that’s never been precious about genre, and the room’s modest size keeps shows feeling like a discovery rather than an event.
Beyond their own records, the Banjanin brothers run Pony Recordings and operate Pony Studios out of a Hackney warehouse, producing both their own music and releases for other artists — a DIY streak that runs through everything the band does, from songwriting to mixing to the artwork on their records. After the show, East Austin’s live music corridor continues at Historic Scoot Inn, a short drive away.
Doors are at 6 PM for this show. Hotel Vegas is a small room, so arrive early if you want to be close to the stage.
