Gate’s Hill Cemetery is located at the South end of Bonham off of State Hwy 78. There is no fence around the cemetery.

Charlie Christian is considered a pivotal figure in the history of jazz and electric guitar. His impact on music is immense. Charlie Christian is often credited with laying the foundation for the modern electric guitar and its role in popular music. His innovative approach and technical brilliance have made him a legendary figure in the world of music.    

  • Pioneering Electric Guitar: Christian was one of the first guitarists to fully exploit the potential of the electric guitar. Before him, the guitar was primarily a rhythm instrument. He transformed it into a lead instrument capable of complex melodies and improvisation.  
  • Influential Playing Style: His innovative use of single-note lines, bending notes, and vibrato created a new vocabulary for guitarists. His playing style was incredibly expressive and influential on countless musicians who followed.  
  • Bebop Influence: Christian’s work with the Benny Goodman Orchestra brought him to the forefront of the developing bebop movement. His guitar playing helped shape the sound of this groundbreaking genre.  
  • Enduring Legacy: Despite his tragically short life, Christian’s impact on music is undeniable. His influence can be heard in the playing of countless guitarists, from jazz to rock and beyond.  

The pioneering jazz guitarist was born on July 29, 1916, in Bonham. However, he spent most of his childhood in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where his family moved when he was a young child. He is buried in the Gates Hill Cemetery in Bonham.
