Linden: T-Bone Walker Birthplace

Aaron Thibeaux Walker was born on May 28, 1910, in Linden. The town is the county seat of Cass County, nestled deep in the East Texas Piney Woods. Although his family soon moved to Dallas, Linden holds its permanent place as the birthplace of one of America’s greatest guitarists. Moreover, T-Bone Walker transformed the blues through his pioneering use of the electric guitar. Indeed, he became the first major blues artist to popularize the electric guitar as a lead instrument. Furthermore, his innovations changed the direction of American popular music for generations to come.

Walker’s mother played guitar and sang, and music flowed naturally through his childhood home. His stepfather was a musician who performed with Blind Lemon Jefferson, one of the most celebrated early blues artists in Texas. As a result, Walker grew up immersed in the blues tradition from his earliest years. In addition, the folk and gospel sounds of East Texas formed the bedrock of his musical instincts. Consequently, the Piney Woods region where he was born contributed directly to the blues revolution he would later lead. The East Texas Piney Woods stretches across the northeastern corner of the state, and Cass County sits at its heart. This region produced a remarkable number of influential blues and gospel musicians in the early twentieth century. In particular, African American communities of East Texas built a rich musical tradition that traveled with families as they migrated to Dallas, Houston, and beyond.

T-Bone Walker carried that tradition with him when his family relocated to the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas. Furthermore, those East Texas sounds remained the foundation of his style throughout his entire career.

Walker went on to win a Grammy Award in 1971 and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980. Additionally, he received a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Nevertheless, his roots always remained in the Piney Woods of East Texas. Today, Cass County proudly honors its native son.
