Ella Mae Morse was born on September 12, 1924, in Mansfield, Texas. Mansfield is a small city in Tarrant County, just south of Arlington and southeast of Fort Worth. Her father, George Morse, was a British sailor turned Texan who played the drums. Her mother, Ann, played the piano. Together, they formed a jazz combo and encouraged their daughter’s musical development from the very beginning. Consequently, Ella Mae grew up surrounded by music and rhythm in all its forms. Moreover, she began singing with her parents in local performances while she was still a young girl.

Morse went on to become one of the most distinctive voices in American popular music. In 1942, at just seventeen years old, she recorded “Cow Cow Boogie” with Freddie Slack’s band.
