During World War II, a teenage Lefty Frizzell landed in Greenville, Texas. He was already singing. He was already restless. And he was already becoming the musician who would change country music.
Greenville sits in Hunt County in northeast Texas, about 50 miles east of Dallas. During the war years, it was a working town with a working-class musical circuit — the kind of Texas community where a young singer could find a room, find an audience, and find radio stations willing to put him on the air. Frizzell did all three.
While living in Greenville, he performed on radio station KPLT in nearby Paris, Texas. Radio was everything in those years — the way country musicians reached audiences they could not reach on the road, the way a voice from Hunt County could travel across the Red River country and into living rooms forty miles away. Frizzell’s voice was built for radio. It carried.
Where He Found His Future
It was in Paris and Greenville that Frizzell met Alice Harper. They married in March 1945, and Alice would stay with him through everything that followed — the stardom, the lawsuits, the arrests, the alcoholism, the long decline. Their marriage produced three children and lasted until his death in 1975. It was not easy. But she stayed.
During this northeast Texas period, Frizzell’s style was still taking shape. He was absorbing Jimmie Rodgers, Ernest Tubb, and Ted Daffan. He was learning what honky-tonk music could do in a room full of people who needed to forget their week. He was becoming Lefty — the singer who held syllables so long they became something else entirely.
Greenville, Texas is not in the country music history books. But it was part of the formation. The young oilman’s son from Corsicana was building something here, one radio spot and one dance hall night at a time.
