Turkey: Bob Wills Museum

Turkey, Texas sits at the edge of the Caprock Escarpment in Hall County. Cotton country. Oil country. Flat and wide and sky-heavy in every direction. Population: just over four hundred. It is the unlikeliest possible birthplace for one of American music’s most transformative figures. But Bob Wills was born here in 1905, and the Bob Wills Museum Turkey Texas has been making the case ever since.

The museum sits on Lyles Street, a few blocks from the county courthouse. It holds photographs, instruments, stage costumes, and personal items from the man who fused country, jazz, blues, and big-band swing into something neither genre knew how to classify. Western Swing, they eventually called it. And what Wills and his Texas Playboys built in the late 1930s and 1940s became the foundation for a whole branch of American popular music. Bob Dylan cited Wills as an influence. Merle Haggard revered him — and recorded a full album of tributes. The Panhandle plains where Wills learned to fiddle from his father are still visible from the museum parking lot.

Bob Wills Day

Every April, Turkey hosts Bob Wills Day. Fans come from across the country to these same plains where it all started. Former Texas Playboys perform. The whole town fills up. It’s one of the great small-town music celebrations in the state — the kind of gathering that reminds you how deep the roots go when a town claims one of the greats as its own.

The museum is open daily, though hours can vary — call ahead before making the drive. If you’re coming up from the south, the Plainview: Jimmy Dean Museum is an hour and a half down US 70 — another West Texas music story with a completely different arc, and equally worth the stop.
