Schulenburg: Texas Polka Music Museum

The museum sits on North Main Street in a town that has been serving polka dancers since before the Civil War. Inside, you’ll find instruments, photographs, recordings, and band memorabilia from the musicians who kept the accordion-driven sound alive through more than a century of musical change. The names may not ring bells outside Fayette County. But inside the county, they’re the backbone of a living tradition — one that never needed Nashville’s permission to keep going.

Where the Accordion Never Stopped

Polka didn’t just survive in Central Texas. It adapted. Czech and German rhythms absorbed elements of country, tejano, and Western swing. What came out was something distinctly Texan — a dance hall culture built on accordion and bass and the kind of Saturday night energy that still fills halls across the Schulenburg area.
