Denton: Faded Blue

In 2015, Devin Drake got laid off at 51. He started hunting storage unit auctions across North Texas. What he pulled from those units became Faded Blue Denton. The shop sits on North Locust Street, just north of the Denton Square.

Drake had lived in Denton for 23 years by then. He knew the town, knew the culture, knew that people here still searched for things with physical weight. The store now holds more than 5,000 used records and CDs alongside vintage clothing, hats, shirts, and accessories. It doesn’t narrow its focus. That’s not the point.

Records, Vintage, and Darts in the Back

The back room tells you something about how Faded Blue operates. Beyond the record bins and vintage racks, a full wall of dart supplies fills the back. A local dart league calls it home. University of North Texas sits less than two miles away. That student population keeps the seller side of the equation moving. But the store serves all of Denton, not just the campus crowd. For the city’s largest and oldest record shop, Recycled Books on the Denton Square has been there since 1983. Faded Blue runs smaller, stranger, and newer — the record shop equivalent of a curio cabinet that got ambitious.

Drake built the store from what he found after a job ended. That turns out to be exactly how Denton likes things built.
