Today is the birthday of Janis Joplin. She would be 84 today.
Port Arthur is a refinery town on the Texas Gulf Coast — the kind of place that smells like industry and feels like the edge of something. Janis Lyn Joplin was born there on January 19, 1943. She was odd from the start: smart, loud, interested in the blues at a time when Port Arthur girls were supposed to be interested in something else entirely. She left for Austin, then San Francisco, then the world. And the world wasn’t ready.
The Rawest Voice in Rock and Roll
With Big Brother and the Holding Company at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Joplin stopped a generation cold. Her version of “Piece of My Heart” remains one of the great rock and roll performances. “Me and Bobby McGee,” recorded days before her death, hit No. 1 after she was gone. She died on October 4, 1970, at 27. Port Arthur eventually put up a statue. It took them a while. The Texas State Historical Association tells the fuller story.
