Lefty Frizzell: Corsicana’s Country Architect

Today is the birthday of Lefty Frizzell. He would be 99 today.

William Orville Frizzell was born in Corsicana, Texas on March 31, 1928. He grew up in oil-boom towns across Navarro and Upshur counties, moving with his father’s drilling work. He taught himself to play guitar and sing in the style of Jimmie Rodgers, then added something Rodgers hadn’t done — he stretched syllables, bent words, held a note long past where anyone expected him to land. It was a new way of phrasing country music. Nobody had quite done it before.

The Phrasing That Passed Into the DNA

Frizzell signed with Columbia Records in 1950 and immediately had four singles in the country Top 10 simultaneously — a record that stood for decades. “If You’ve Got the Money I’ve Got the Time” was the breakthrough. But listen to “I Want to Be with You Always” or “I Love You a Thousand Ways” and you’ll hear the phrasing that changed everything. Merle Haggard copied it note for note as a teenager. Willie Nelson absorbed it. Keith Whitley studied it obsessively. Frizzell died July 19, 1975, in Nashville. But every syllable he bent is still bending somewhere.
