Kenny Rogers: Houston’s Country Gambler

Today is the birthday of Kenny Rogers. He would be 88 today.

Kenneth Donald Rogers was born in Houston, Texas on August 21, 1938, in the Third Ward. His family was large and poor. He grew up singing in school choirs and started playing local clubs as a teenager. He joined the New Christy Minstrels in the early 1960s, then formed the First Edition in 1967 — a psychedelic-folk group that had an unlikely hit with “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” in 1968. Kenny Rogers was already thirty and still figuring out where his career was going.

The Gambler’s Run

“The Gambler” came out in 1978 and became one of the most recognizable songs in American music history. “Lucille” hit No. 1 in 1977. “Lady” in 1980. His duet with Dolly Parton, “Islands in the Stream,” in 1983 sold over two million copies. Rogers understood something about storytelling that most country singers missed — the song had to be a movie in three minutes. His Kenny Rogers Roasters chicken restaurant chain made him a household name to people who’d never bought a record. He died March 20, 2020, in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
