For roughly a decade after settling in Central Texas, Small Faces and Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan and his Bump Band held down a Thursday night residency at the Lucky Lounge, a downtown club on West 5th Street. It became one of Austin’s great standing dates: Mac thumping the piano and organ, telling stories about the Faces and his complicated history with Rod Stewart, and treating a room full of regulars to a catalog stretching from Small Faces and Faces classics to his own solo songs.
McLagan wasn’t a rock star coasting on his laurels in Austin — he hustled gigs to pay the bills, and the Lucky Lounge Thursdays were the steadiest of them. It was that residency, more than any arena show, that made him part of the city’s music community rather than a legend gated off from it.
