University Park: Willis Alan Ramsey at Highland Park High School

Willis Alan Ramsey was born in Birmingham, Alabama, but was raised in Dallas from age 10 and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1969. He was a prominent baritone in the school’s Lads and Lassies Choir, and in his senior year he landed a leading role in the school musical “Carousel” — an early sign of the performing instincts that would soon make him one of the most quietly influential songwriters in Texas music.

Just three years after graduating, Ramsey released his self-titled debut, Willis Alan Ramsey, in 1972 on the Shelter label — the only album he has ever recorded. It included “Muskrat Candlelight,” later covered as “Muskrat Love” by America in 1973 and by Captain & Tennille in 1976, and songs that would go on to be recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Jeff Walker, Shawn Colvin, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Widespread Panic. Ramsey then walked away from the recording studio on his own terms, becoming one of Texas music’s great cult legends — a legacy that started on the Highland Park stage.
