Founded in 1996 when Óscar Iván Treviño and Dimas López started performing together in a restaurant in Roma, Texas, Grupo Duelo grew into one of the most consistently successful bands in norteño music, splitting its identity between the Texas border town where it started and Monterrey, Nuevo León, just across the Rio Grande. The band’s 2003 album Desde Hoy topped sales charts in Monterrey and earned a gold record in Mexico, launching a run that included a No. 1 debut on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart with 2009’s Necesito Más de Ti and another chart-topper the following year with Solamente Tú.
Three Nights, One Houston Homecoming
Houston’s sizable Mexican and Mexican-American community has long made it a home-turf stop for Grupo Duelo, and this year the band is playing three consecutive nights at Toyota Center — Aug. 21, 22 and 23 — rather than a single date, a sign of how deep its following runs in the city. Norteño’s blend of accordion, bajo sexto and close-harmony vocals has deep roots along the Texas-Mexico border, and Grupo Duelo has been one of the genre’s most durable ambassadors, carrying that sound to arenas and theaters across the country.
The band’s romantic, hook-heavy songwriting has earned multiple Billboard nominations for Regional Mexican Album and Song of the Year, and its live shows remain a fixture on the Texas dance-hall and theater circuit. That border-crossing legacy sits alongside other South Texas institutions honored at the Totally Tejano Hall of Fame & Museum in San Antonio, which traces the broader Tejano and norteño lineage Grupo Duelo has helped carry forward.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show. Toyota Center sits in downtown Houston with several nearby garages for parking; given the band’s loyal following and the multi-night run, arriving early for a good spot on the floor is a good idea.
