Founded in 1996 when Óscar Iván Treviño and Dimas López started performing together in a restaurant in Roma, Texas, Grupo Duelo grew into one of the most consistently successful bands in norteño music, splitting its identity between the Texas border town where it started and Monterrey, Nuevo León, just across the Rio Grande. The band’s 2003 album Desde Hoy topped sales charts in Monterrey and earned a gold record in Mexico, launching a run that included a No. 1 debut on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart with 2009’s Necesito Más de Ti and another chart-topper the following year with Solamente Tú.
Grupo Duelo Closes Out the Texas Run in El Paso
El Paso sits at the far western edge of Texas, hundreds of miles from the Rio Grande Valley where Grupo Duelo’s sound first took hold, and a stop at El Paso County Coliseum shows how far the band’s norteño reach now extends across the state. The Coliseum has hosted Tejano and norteño acts for decades, giving the border city’s large Mexican-American population a dependable home for the genre’s biggest touring names.
The band’s romantic, hook-heavy songwriting has earned multiple Billboard nominations for Regional Mexican Album and Song of the Year, and its live shows remain a fixture across Texas border cities. That border-region legacy sits alongside other South Texas institutions honored at the Totally Tejano Hall of Fame & Museum in San Antonio, which traces the broader Tejano and norteño lineage Grupo Duelo has helped carry forward.
