Steve Jordan of Elsa, Texas, played the accordion like it owed him money. He lost sight in one eye as a child, then turned that limit into legend. Fans nicknamed him “El Parche,” Spanish for “the patch,” after his eyepatch. Critics later called him the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion, and the comparison fit. He recorded for small Valley labels long before major labels ever noticed him. His accordion runs crackled like a live wire sparking in a rainstorm.

How One Eye Sharpened the Sharpest Ear in Conjunto

Jordan grew up in Elsa, a small farming town deep in the Rio Grande Valley. He started playing accordion as a boy, soaking up conjunto at local dances. Nighttime radio also carried jazz and rock signals across the border into his room. But he refused to stay inside conjunto’s traditional two-step boundaries. Instead, he pulled in jazz chords, rock riffs, and even salsa rhythms. Traditionalists sometimes bristled, yet younger musicians followed him anyway.

Jordan recorded prolifically, releasing albums that still baffle genre-obsessed record store clerks. He toured with rock and blues acts far outside the usual conjunto circuit. Those promoters booked him precisely because he refused easy categories. Fellow accordion giant Flaco Jiménez often cited him as a direct influence. Few players before or since have pushed the instrument that far.
