About Michael Martin Murphey
Michael Martin Murphey was born in Dallas in 1945 and broke through in 1975 with “Wildfire,” the haunting ghost-horse ballad that became a top-five pop hit and one of the most-played songs in American radio history. He followed it with “Carolina in the Pines” and “What’s Forever For,” but by the late 1980s he had steered his career back toward the Western music that shaped his childhood. His 1990 album “Cowboy Songs” went platinum and helped spark a revival of traditional cowboy balladry, a lane Michael Martin Murphey has owned ever since through a long-running “Cowboy Songs” album series and the WestFest festival he founded in Colorado..
Red River Station sits on the Red River Station Trail just outside Saint Jo, a small North Texas town that has become an unlikely stop for major touring acts thanks to the venue’s outdoor stage and dance hall atmosphere. It is the kind of room where a songwriter’s catalog carries the night, and Murphey’s decades of storytelling songs are built for exactly that setting.
