James Moody cashed in his 401(k) to buy a bar. Nearly two decades later, Mohawk is one of the longest-running clubs left on Red River Street.

Moody, a former pharmaceutical sales rep with no venue experience, took over 912 Red River Street in 2006 — a building that had already cycled through the Velvet Spade, the Caucus Club, and Le Privilege — and opened Mohawk on September 15, 2006, with Ghostland Observatory headlining. He built it as a split-level indoor/outdoor space: an indoor stage and bar, an outdoor deck stage beneath the Texas sky, and a rooftop bar above it all. Reported capacity has varied over the years, from roughly 700 in its early days to as many as 900 for a full-venue buyout today — the kind of ambiguity that comes with two decades of renovations and different ways of counting a crowd.

Anchoring Red River

Mohawk sits at the heart of the Red River Cultural District, the entertainment corridor that has also been home to Stubb’s, the original Emo’s, Red 7, Barracuda, and Sidewinder. Moody’s booking company, Transmission Entertainment — co-owned with Graham Williams — has at times booked an estimated 700 shows a year across Mohawk and sister rooms like Red 7 and the Parish, making Mohawk an anchor of the broader Austin and Central Texas independent concert circuit. Over nearly twenty years the club has hosted a genre-spanning list of acts: Iggy Pop, Spoon, Bad Brains, Public Enemy, The Breeders, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Ice Cube, Mission of Burma, The Sword, The Black Angels, Yelle, and Dungen among them, alongside its regular run as an official SXSW showcase venue.

Outlasting the Neighborhood

Many of Mohawk’s original Red River-era peers — the original Emo’s, Red 7, Club de Ville — have since closed or relocated, but Mohawk has persisted, closing briefly during the COVID-19 pandemic before reopening in 2020–2021 to considerable local fanfare. That longevity, paired with its hybrid indoor/outdoor design, is why Mohawk is frequently named among Austin’s landmark independent venues, standing alongside neighbors like Stubb’s Bar-B-Q a few blocks down Red River as proof the district’s DIY spirit survived redevelopment pressure and a pandemic alike.
