Joe Ely: Amarillo’s Restless Heart

Today is the birthday of Joe Ely. He is 80 today.

Joe Ely was born in Amarillo, Texas on February 9, 1947. The Panhandle stamped itself on him permanently — the flat horizons, the wind, the sense that you’re always standing on the edge of something too big to name. He moved to Lubbock as a teenager and fell in with a group that would come to be called the Lubbock Mafia: Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Terry Allen. They were writing songs nobody in Nashville would touch yet.

Ely released his first album on MCA in 1977. It was raw, smart, and unlike anything country radio was playing. The Clash heard it and invited him to tour England with them in 1980. That partnership made headlines — a West Texas cowboy and the kings of British punk sharing a stage. It made perfect sense to anyone who actually listened.
