Formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1984, Dinosaur Jr. helped invent the template for a huge swath of alternative rock that followed, fusing hardcore punk’s velocity with guitarist J Mascis’s towering, distortion-drenched solos and a melodic, almost classic-rock sense of songwriting. Albums like “You’re Living All Over Me” and “Bug” became touchstones for the shoegaze and grunge movements that followed, and the band’s reunion of its classic Mascis-Lou Barlow-Murph lineup in 2005 has produced some of the most acclaimed work of their career.
