October 17 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
$30
Joy Oladokun plays the Historic Scoot Inn on Saturday, October 17, bringing her warm, genre-blurring songwriting to East Austin. Doors are at 6:30 PM, with tickets starting around $30.
Born in Casa Grande, Arizona to Nigerian immigrant parents and now based in Nashville, Oladokun writes songs that move easily between folk, pop, and R&B, built around a voice that can turn a quiet acoustic verse into a full-throated hook without losing any intimacy. Her 2021 breakthrough album in defense of my own happiness introduced her to a much wider audience, and she’s since written and recorded with artists across genres, including Maren Morris, Chris Stapleton, Noah Kahan, and Jason Isbell — a list that reflects just how broadly her songwriting appeals, cutting across the usual lines between country, pop, and singer-songwriter folk.
The Scoot Inn’s East 4th Street location, with its patio stage strung with lights, is one of the more low-key, conversational rooms in Austin’s touring circuit — a good match for an artist whose songs tend to invite that kind of close listening even in a crowd. It’s a venue that’s hosted plenty of singer-songwriters making the same journey from intimate club shows to much bigger stages, and the open-air setting suits a catalog built on warmth as much as craft.
Oladokun’s 2024 album Proof of Life continued her run of candid, deeply personal songwriting about faith, identity, and mental health, and her 2022 performance at a White House bill-signing ceremony for the Respect for Marriage Act underscored how directly her music has connected with listeners navigating their own stories about family and belonging. For more East Austin nightlife after the show, Hotel Vegas is just a short walk away.
Doors are at 6:30 PM. The Scoot Inn’s stage is mostly outdoors, so check the forecast and dress accordingly.
