Today is the birthday of Charlie Sexton. He would be 59 today.

Charlie Sexton entered the world in San Antonio, but Austin, Texas raised the guitarist inside him. His family moved there when he was only four years old. He started playing professional gigs on Sixth Street before he hit puberty. That early fame felt strange for a kid barely out of middle school. Sexton then scored a teen pop hit with ‘Beat’s So Lonely’ in 1985. MTV turned him into an unlikely heartthrob almost overnight. Austin’s guitar scene, though, always saw him as one of its own.

Sexton grew up alongside Stevie Ray Vaughan in Austin’s tight-knit blues circles. He absorbed that same raw, unpolished guitar tone early on.
