Deer Tick Kessler Theater tickets are on sale for Sunday, October 18, as the Providence, Rhode Island band brings its rough-and-tumble indie folk-rock to Oak Cliff. Songwriter John McCauley started the project in December 2004 as a solo outlet before piecing together a full band, and he taught himself guitar, drums, piano, and pedal steel while touring the region as a teenager. The band’s name actually came from a real deer tick McCauley found on his scalp while hiking near Bloomington, Indiana, in the summer of 2005.
Deer Tick released its debut album, War Elephant, in 2007, and the band has continued releasing records that mix indie folk-rock, alt-country, and blues-rock ever since, including 2013’s Negativity and 2023’s Emotional Contracts, their first for ATO Records. After celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024, the band released Coin-O-Matic in 2026, its first fully self-produced album. Because two decades of restless touring shaped their sound, expect a loose, high-energy set in Oak Cliff.
About the Kessler Theater
The Kessler Theater has anchored the Oak Cliff neighborhood since opening in 1942, and the Art Deco building was once owned by singing cowboy Gene Autry. Since its restoration and reopening as a live music venue, the Kessler Theater has built a reputation for pristine acoustics and an intimate room that puts fans close to the stage.
