Formed by Luke Steele (of The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (of Pnau) in 2007, Empire of the Sun built its reputation on lush, synth-driven electro-pop and an equally elaborate visual identity — towering headdresses, glittering costumes, and theatrical stage production that turned their shows into full visual spectacles from the start. Breakthrough singles “Walking on a Dream” and “We Are the People” made them festival mainstays, and the duo’s continued run of glossy, hook-heavy singles has kept them a reliable amphitheater draw well over a decade into their career.
Dos Equis Pavilion at Fair Park has hosted Dallas’s biggest outdoor summer concerts since it opened in 1988 as the Coca-Cola Starplex Amphitheatre, changing sponsor names half a dozen times since. The 20,000-capacity amphitheater splits between a partially covered, 7,500-seat pavilion section and a sprawling 12,500-person general-admission lawn, and hosted Lollapalooza, Ozzfest, Lilith Fair, and the Vans Warped Tour in various years throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
