Founded in 1996 when Óscar Iván Treviño and Dimas López started performing together in a restaurant in Roma, Texas, Grupo Duelo grew into one of the most consistently successful bands in norteño music, splitting its identity between the Texas border town where it started and Monterrey, Nuevo León, just across the Rio Grande. The band’s 2003 album Desde Hoy topped sales charts in Monterrey and earned a gold record in Mexico, launching a run that included a No. 1 debut on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart with 2009’s Necesito Más de Ti and another chart-topper the following year with Solamente Tú.
Grupo Duelo Brings Norteño to Fair Park
Dallas-Fort Worth’s large Mexican-American population has made North Texas a regular stop for Grupo Duelo, and Dos Equis Pavilion’s open-air setting at Fair Park gives the band’s accordion-and-bajo-sexto sound plenty of room to carry. Norteño’s close-harmony vocals and dance-hall rhythms have deep roots along the Texas-Mexico border, and Grupo Duelo has been one of the genre’s most durable ambassadors, carrying that sound from the Rio Grande Valley to amphitheaters across the country.
The band’s romantic, hook-heavy songwriting has earned multiple Billboard nominations for Regional Mexican Album and Song of the Year, and its live shows remain a fixture on the Texas dance-hall and amphitheater circuit. That border-crossing legacy sits alongside other South Texas institutions honored at the Totally Tejano Hall of Fame & Museum in San Antonio, which traces the broader Tejano and norteño lineage Grupo Duelo has helped carry forward.
