Dallas: Old Crow Medicine Show at the Majestic Theatre

November 1 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$55
Old Crow Medicine Show performing live in 2010

String-band revivalists Old Crow Medicine Show play the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas on Sunday, November 1.

Formed in the mid-1990s and eventually adopted by bluegrass legend Doc Watson, who discovered the band busking on a North Carolina street corner, Old Crow Medicine Show helped spark old-time string music’s return to mainstream popularity in the 2000s. Their best-known song, “Wagon Wheel,” began as an unfinished Bob Dylan fragment that band member Ketch Secor completed into one of the most-covered songs of the last two decades, later a chart-topping hit for Darius Rucker. The band has since become a Grand Ole Opry member and a Americana-chart mainstay, touring behind a catalog that mixes original songs with an obvious reverence for old-time and bluegrass tradition.

The Majestic Theatre has anchored downtown Dallas since it opened in April 1921, a Renaissance Revival vaudeville palace designed by architect John Eberson for showman Karl Hoblitzelle, complete with an atmospheric ceiling meant to evoke a starlit sky. It closed as a movie house in 1973, was donated to the City of Dallas in 1976, and reopened after restoration in 1983 as a performing-arts venue that the city still owns and operates today. The 1,570-seat theater keeps its five-story marble lobby and ornate cage elevator intact. Read more on its Texas Music Map venue page. Being a fully seated theater, every ticket here comes with an actual seat rather than standing room.

Expect a high-energy string-band set built around fiddle, banjo, and guitar interplay, with “Wagon Wheel” almost certainly closing the night — a song so ubiquitous that seated theater crowds tend to sing along whether they came for it or not.

Doors typically open about an hour ahead of the show, with downtown Dallas parking garages nearby.
