Flatland Cavalry formed at Texas Tech University in Lubbock and built their following the old-fashioned way — playing dance halls and honky-tonks from the Panhandle to the Hill Country. Their 2021 album Welcome to Countryland showed a band expanding beyond their West Texas roots without losing what made them worth hearing. Lead singer Cleto Cordero writes about real places and real feelings. That specificity is rare, and it shows.
