The Austin duo has spent two decades building one of Texas’ most electric live shows, and this Stockyards stop is a rare chance to catch them in an intimate room.
Formed in Austin in 2004, Ghostland Observatory is Aaron Behrens on vocals and guitar and Thomas Turner on drums, synthesizers, and production, blending electro, funk, and rock into a sound Allmusic once called “electro-dance soul rock.” The duo built a national following through relentless touring and a reputation for blowout live shows, complete with strobe-heavy lighting rigs and Turner’s wizard-like stage presence behind a wall of synths.
The band’s breakthrough came with 2007’s “Robotique Majestique,” which pushed tracks like “Sad Sad City” onto national television when Ghostland Observatory made its debut on NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien. That same year, the Austin American-Statesman named them the city’s band of the year, cementing their status as one of the defining acts to come out of Austin’s 2000s music scene, a lineage that runs alongside other Austin guitar-and-groove exports like Gary Clark Jr.
Tannahill’s Tavern & Music Hall, set inside a converted mule barn in the Fort Worth Stockyards, has quickly become one of North Texas’ go-to rooms for touring acts since opening, pairing a historic setting with a modern sound system built for exactly this kind of high-energy show. Ghostland Observatory’s Texas roots make this a homecoming of sorts, and the band has a long history of turning club shows into full-blown dance parties.
The duo has continued releasing music independently in the years since, including 2021’s “Angels of Death,” while remaining road warriors on the festival and club circuit. Their catalog now spans five studio albums, and longtime fans know their setlists mix early favorites with deep cuts reworked for the live show.
