Houston: Peter Hook and the Light at White Oak Music Hall

Peter Hook and the Light bring the songs of Joy Division and New Order to White Oak Music Hall’s Downstairs room in Houston on September 10, with the show starting at 7 PM. Hook, the original bassist for both bands, has spent over a decade touring with his own group performing those catalogs in full album sets, giving fans a rare chance to hear post-punk and early electronic classics played live by one of the musicians who created them.

Joy Division’s brief but hugely influential run in the late 1970s, capped by Ian Curtis’s death in 1980, gave way to New Order, which Hook co-founded and helped steer toward the dance-influenced sound of hits like “Blue Monday” and “Bizarre Love Triangle.” Hook’s distinctive, melodic bass playing was central to both bands’ sound, and after departing New Order in 2007 he formed the Light specifically to keep that music alive on stage, performing albums like “Unknown Pleasures,” “Closer,” “Movement,” and “Power, Corruption & Lies” start to finish on various tours.

White Oak Music Hall’s Downstairs room, one of three distinct performance spaces at the East Houston venue, gives Hook’s set an intimate club setting suited to the moody, atmospheric material at the heart of the Joy Division catalog.
