Allen grew up to become one of the most genuinely original artists Texas has produced — songwriter\, visual artist\, playwright\, and performance artist simultaneously. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles\, but his imagination never left the red-dirt towns of West Texas. \nThe Lubbock Suite That Explained Everything\nHis 1979 album Lubbock (on everything) is a masterpiece — a song cycle about Lubbock\, Texas\, that is also a song cycle about America\, desire\, violence\, and memory. David Byrne of Talking Heads called it one of his favorite records. Guy Clark\, Joe Ely\, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore all consider Allen a peer. He has exhibited visual art at the Museum of Modern Art. DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Willie Nelson. He is 93 today. \nWillie Hugh Nelson was born in Abbott\, Texas on April 29\, 1933. Abbott is a small farming community in Hill County\, about sixty miles south of Fort Worth. His parents left when he was young. His grandparents raised him. He was picking cotton at six and playing guitar in a band at nine. He played every roadhouse and dance hall in the area before heading to Nashville to sell songs in the late 1950s. Nashville bought them but didn’t quite know what to do with Willie himself. \nThe Outlaw Who Never Left Texas\nPatsy Cline took his “Crazy” to No. 1 in 1961. Faron Young hit with “Hello Walls.” Billy Walker charted “Funny How Time Slips Away.” Nashville loved his pen and ignored his voice. So Nelson moved back to Texas in 1972 and played the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin to a crowd of hippies and rednecks who didn’t care about Nashville’s rules. The Outlaw Country movement grew from that moment. Red Headed Stranger in 1975 was the album that proved it. He has not stopped moving since — touring every year\, farming in Luck\, Texas\, and recording albums in his late eighties. Abbott gave the world its most durable songwriter. DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Roy Orbison. He would be 90 today. \nRoy Kelton Orbison was born in Vernon\, Texas on April 23\, 1936\, and grew up in West Texas oil towns — Wink and Odessa. He had an operatic tenor voice in a land of honky-tonk. He started recording in Clovis\, New Mexico with Norman Petty — the same producer who worked with Buddy Holly — and had early rockabilly records that didn’t go anywhere. Then he moved to Monument Records in Nashville and found his real register: the dramatic\, tormented love ballad. \nThe Darkness That Was Also Radio Gold\n“Only the Lonely” hit No. 2 in 1960. “Crying” hit No. 2 in 1961. “In Dreams” in 1963. “Oh\, Pretty Woman” went to No. 1 in 1964 and became one of the best-selling singles of the decade. Orbison lost his wife and two sons in separate tragedies in 1966 and 1968. He kept recording. In 1988\, he joined the Traveling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan\, George Harrison\, Tom Petty\, and Jeff Lynne — and held his own on every track. DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. He would be 102 today. \nClarence Brown was born on April 18\, 1924 in Vinton\, Louisiana — but Texas made him. His family moved to Orange\, and Brown grew up absorbing everything the Gulf Coast offered: blues\, country\, Western Swing\, jazz\, zydeco. He played guitar\, violin\, viola\, drums\, and harmonica. He refused to be categorized\, which annoyed record labels and delighted musicians. He landed in Houston and built a career at the Peacock Club on Almeda Road\, cutting records for Don Robey’s Peacock Records starting in 1949. \nThe Multi-Tool That Defied Every Box\nBrown’s guitar work on “Okie Dokie Stomp” in 1954 is still one of the great showcases in Texas blues. But he was always as likely to be playing fiddle as guitar. He appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival. He toured the world. He won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album in 1982 for Alright Again!. He lived in Slidell\, Louisiana in his later years but never stopped calling Texas home. DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Selena. She would be 55 today. \nSelena Quintanilla was born in Lake Jackson\, Texas on April 16\, 1971. Her father Abraham had played in a Tejano band and knew the business. He recognized something in his youngest daughter early and built a family band around her. They played restaurants and small venues across South Texas\, often for tips. Selena was nine years old and already the most magnetic person in the room. \nThe Crossover That Never Happened — and Still Did\nBy the late 1980s\, Selena was the biggest Tejano star in the country. She won the Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album in 1994 for Live! — the first Tejano artist to win in that category. She was recording her first English-language album when she was murdered on March 31\, 1995\, in Corpus Christi\, at twenty-three. The album Dreaming of You was released posthumously and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — the first album by a Latin artist to do so. Lake Jackson put up a mural. SUMMARY:Mance Lipscomb: Navasota's Steady Hand
DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Mance Lipscomb. He would be 131 today. \nBeau De Glen Lipscomb was born in Navasota\, Texas on April 9\, 1895 — the son of a sharecropper and a former slave. He spent sixty years as a farmer and part-time musician in Grimes County\, playing dances and picnics for his neighbors. He called himself a “songster” rather than a blues musician\, because his repertoire ran from field hollers to spirituals to ragtime to whatever the crowd needed. He was not discovered. He was simply found — in 1960\, by a musician and folklorist named Mack McCormick. \nFamous at Sixty-Five\nMcCormick brought Lipscomb to the 1961 Berkeley Folk Festival. The audience had never heard anything quite like him — fingerpicking guitar with a conversational grace that made virtuosity look effortless. He began recording for Arhoolie Records and toured the college folk circuit into his seventies. His song “Ella Speed” had been in the Texas tradition for generations. He made it live again for a new audience. Lipscomb died January 30\, 1976\, in Navasota\, having never left Grimes County for long. The farm held him. The music kept traveling.
