He wrote songs the way other people breathe\, constantly and without effort. Over his career\, he penned more than 7\,000 tunes across blues\, R&B\, and country. Because he refused to stay in one genre\, Nashville and Memphis both claimed him. His biggest hit\, “Since I Met You Baby\,” topped the R&B charts in 1956. He wrote it in a single sitting\, or so the story goes. \nKirbyville’s Quiet Genius Never Stopped Writing\nThat song crossed over to the pop charts too\, a rare feat for a Black artist then. Hunter’s voice carried warmth\, not showmanship\, and listeners trusted it instantly. He wrote for Elvis Presley\, and he wrote for country singers in Nashville studios. Few writers moved between those worlds so easily. Producers trusted him because he always delivered something usable. Still\, Hunter never became a household name outside music circles. His humility worked against him commercially\, though it never touched his songwriting. Like Lightnin’ Hopkins\, he proved Texas roots could stretch into any style.
