DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Roky Erickson. He would be 79 today. \nRoger Kynard Erickson was born in Dallas\, Texas on July 15\, 1947 and grew up in Austin\, where he sang in garage bands as a teenager with a voice that didn’t sound like anything Texas had produced before — high\, keening\, rawly emotional. He formed the 13th Floor Elevators in 1965 with guitarist Tommy Hall and electric jug player/philosopher Benny Thurman. They played their first shows in Austin before the Summer of Love had a name. \nBefore San Francisco Got There\nThe 13th Floor Elevators released their debut album in 1966 — before most San Francisco psychedelic records existed. “You’re Gonna Miss Me” was the single\, a howling two-minute rocket that remains one of the great raw rock records. Erickson was arrested for possession of marijuana in 1969 and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to avoid prison. He spent years in the Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He emerged damaged but still making music. Decades of troubled years gave way to a late-career revival that allowed him to be recognized as the pioneer he was. He died May 31\, 2019\, in Austin. DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Bobby Day. He is 98. \nYou know the song. It starts with a two-note guitar figure and a sharp little percussion break. Then a voice climbs straight into the sky. “Rockin’ Robin” came out of Fort Worth\, Texas — and Bobby Day built it. \nBorn Robert James Byrd on July 1\, 1928\, Day grew up in Fort Worth. By his late teens\, he had decided music was his ticket out. He moved to Los Angeles around 1947 and landed at Johnny Otis’s Barrelhouse Club. It was one of the great proving grounds of West Coast R&B. By 1950\, he had helped form the Hollywood Flames. By 1957\, he had also launched a second group\, the Satellites. That same year\, he wrote “Little Bitty Pretty One” for Thurston Harris — a top-10 Billboard hit. \nThe Bird That Wouldn’t Quit\nBut “Rockin’ Robin” in 1958 put Day on the map for good. The single hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the R&B chart. It sold over a million copies and earned a gold disc. Day’s voice had Fort Worth grit underneath. It was warm and deep\, with real swagger. It made a novelty bird song feel like genuine rock and roll history. \nThen the Dave Clark Five took Day’s “Over and Over” to No. 1 in 1965. And in 1972\, the Jackson 5 rerecorded “Rockin’ Robin\,” bringing that Fort Worth sound to a whole new generation. He died on July 27\, 1990\, in Los Angeles. But the bird song never stopped flying. \nThe Texas State Historical Association calls Day a “rhythm-and-blues pioneer and hitmaker.” That fits. But the real trick Day pulled off was writing songs sturdy enough to outlast him by decades. Only the best songwriters manage that. Fort Worth keeps making them.

His father was a major general in the Air Force. Kristofferson became a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford\, then an Army Ranger and helicopter pilot\, then a Phi Beta Kappa Golden Gloves boxer. None of it held him. He gave up a military career to move to Nashville and clean floors at Columbia Recording Studios\, where he could slide demo tapes to producers between mop strokes. \nThe Songs That Changed Everything\nRoger Miller cut “Me and Bobby McGee” in 1969. Janis Joplin recorded it days before her death in 1970 and it hit No. 1 posthumously in 1971. Johnny Cash\, Rita Coolidge\, and Sammi Smith all recorded Kristofferson songs. “Help Me Make It Through the Night” and “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” won CMA Song of the Year back to back in 1970 and 1971. Jennings gave up his seat on the chartered plane that crashed in Iowa on February 3\, 1959\, killing Holly\, Ritchie Valens\, and the Big Bopper. He carried that weight for the rest of his life. \nThe Nashville Rules He Broke\nJennings moved to Nashville and spent years under RCA’s control — sessions musicians\, producer assignments\, strings. He hated it. In 1973\, he renegotiated his contract and gained creative control. The results came fast. Dreaming My Dreams in 1975. The collaborative album Wanted! The Outlaws in 1976 with Willie Nelson\, Tompall Glaser\, and Jessi Colter — country music’s first platinum album. “Good Ol’ Boys\,” the theme from The Dukes of Hazzard in 1980. In 1934\, she recorded “Mal Hombre” for Bluebird Records in San Antonio. She was paid $3.24 for the session. The record became one of the biggest hits in the Spanish-language market and made her a star overnight. \nThe First Superstar of Tejano\nMendoza performed for migrant farmworkers in tent shows and for Mexican-American communities across the Southwest at a time when no major record label took that audience seriously. She recorded over 200 albums across her career. President Jimmy Carter invited her to perform at his inauguration in 1977. President Bill Clinton awarded her the National Medal of Arts in 1999. As a teenager he led Blind Lemon Jefferson through the Dallas streets\, learning from the master. Then he decided to take the guitar somewhere Blind Lemon hadn’t gone: electric. \nThe Language Every Guitarist Still Speaks\nT-Bone Walker was the father of the electric blues guitar. His recordings for Capitol in the late 1940s — “Call It Stormy Monday\,” “T-Bone Shuffle” — invented the vocabulary. The bent note\, the behind-the-back guitar trick\, the walking around the stage while playing: all of it started with Walker. B.B. King heard him at a Dallas club around 1946 and went home a different musician. Freddie King\, Albert King\, Buddy Guy — they all learned a language that Walker wrote. He liked what he heard. \nLive at PJ’s and Beyond\nSinatra signed Lopez to his Reprise Records label in 1963. Trini Lopez at PJ’s came out that year and produced a Top 5 hit with “If I Had a Hammer.” Lopez delivered it with a driving guitar rhythm that turned a protest song into a dance floor hit. He appeared in The Dirty Dozen in 1967 alongside Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine. He became one of the most internationally recognized Latin entertainers of his era\, touring Europe extensively through the 1960s and 1970s. Abbott is a small farming community in Hill County\, about sixty miles south of Fort Worth. His parents left when he was young. His grandparents raised him. He was picking cotton at six and playing guitar in a band at nine. He played every roadhouse and dance hall in the area before heading to Nashville to sell songs in the late 1950s. Nashville bought them but didn’t quite know what to do with Willie himself. \nThe Outlaw Who Never Left Texas\nPatsy Cline took his “Crazy” to No. 1 in 1961. Faron Young hit with “Hello Walls.” Billy Walker charted “Funny How Time Slips Away.” Nashville loved his pen and ignored his voice. So Nelson moved back to Texas in 1972 and played the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin to a crowd of hippies and rednecks who didn’t care about Nashville’s rules. The Outlaw Country movement grew from that moment. Red Headed Stranger in 1975 was the album that proved it. He has not stopped moving since — touring every year\, farming in Luck\, Texas\, and recording albums in his late eighties. Abbott gave the world its most durable songwriter. Then he moved to Monument Records in Nashville and found his real register: the dramatic\, tormented love ballad. \nThe Darkness That Was Also Radio Gold\n“Only the Lonely” hit No. 2 in 1960. “Crying” hit No. 2 in 1961. “In Dreams” in 1963. “Oh\, Pretty Woman” went to No. 1 in 1964 and became one of the best-selling singles of the decade. Orbison lost his wife and two sons in separate tragedies in 1966 and 1968. He kept recording. In 1988\, he joined the Traveling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan\, George Harrison\, Tom Petty\, and Jeff Lynne — and held his own on every track. He landed in Houston and built a career at the Peacock Club on Almeda Road\, cutting records for Don Robey’s Peacock Records starting in 1949. \nThe Multi-Tool That Defied Every Box\nBrown’s guitar work on “Okie Dokie Stomp” in 1954 is still one of the great showcases in Texas blues. But he was always as likely to be playing fiddle as guitar. He appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival. He toured the world. He won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album in 1982 for Alright Again!. He lived in Slidell\, Louisiana in his later years but never stopped calling Texas home.
