He was genuine Texas in a genre full of pretenders from New Jersey. \nThe Voice That Opened High Noon\nHis voice opens one of the greatest Westerns ever made. “Do Not Forsake Me” played over the credits of High Noon in 1952 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Ritter joined the Grand Ole Opry and recorded for Capitol Records for decades. His son John Ritter became one of television’s most beloved actors. It made Joplin famous and earned him a royalty for life. He followed it with dozens more rags — “The Entertainer\,” “Elite Syncopations\,” “The Cascades” — each one a small\, perfect engine of syncopated rhythm and countermelody. Joplin spent his later years on Treemonisha\, a full-length opera\, which he could not get produced or funded in his lifetime. He died April 1\, 1917\, in New York\, broke and ill.
