DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Victoria Spivey. She would be 120 today. \nVictoria Spivey grew up in Houston\, Texas\, surrounded by a musical family. Her father led a string band\, and her sisters all sang professionally too. She started performing in Houston’s rowdy Third Ward clubs as a teenager. There\, she learned to command a room full of skeptical strangers. By 1926\, she had already moved to New York and signed with Okeh Records. Her first single\, “Black Snake Blues\,” sold astonishingly well for a debut. Soon she stood among the biggest names in classic blues\, alongside Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. Newspapers called her the “Queen of the Blues\,” and audiences agreed. \nThe Houston Songbird Who Refused to Fade Quietly\nSpivey wrote raw\, unflinching lyrics about heartbreak\, poverty\, and desire. She never softened a verse just to sound polite. In 1929\, she starred in the all-Black film “Hallelujah\,” directed by King Vidor. Because her voice carried both grit and theater\, Hollywood came calling early. However\, the classic blues era faded fast during the Great Depression. Many of her peers vanished from records entirely after that. Spivey refused to disappear\, though\, and she kept working steadily behind the scenes.
