Newspapers called her the “Queen of the Blues\,” and audiences agreed. \nThe Houston Songbird Who Refused to Fade Quietly\nSpivey wrote raw\, unflinching lyrics about heartbreak\, poverty\, and desire. She never softened a verse just to sound polite. In 1929\, she starred in the all-Black film “Hallelujah\,” directed by King Vidor.
