Then Pontiac in 1988 went further — a record that used a jazz big band and a gospel choir to tell Texas stories nobody had dared to tell quite that way. He won four Grammy Awards. He married Julia Roberts in 1993 — a tabloid story that never quite captured who Lovett actually was. He kept touring\, kept recording\, kept playing with his Large Band. Her voice had the directness of someone who had seen enough to speak plainly about all of it. \nThe Mentor Bonnie Raitt Never Forgot\nWallace recorded blues standards alongside Louis Armstrong and Clarence Williams in the 1920s. Then she spent decades away from recording\, working in the church. She returned to performing in the 1960s folk revival\, making new records and touring college campuses. Bonnie Raitt heard her and was transformed. Raitt has credited Wallace as one of her most important influences — and the two recorded together. By nineteen\, Jacquet stood ready for a moment that would define his career. \nOne Solo Basically Invented the Honking Tenor\nIn 1942\, Jacquet joined Lionel Hampton’s band and stepped up for “Flying Home.” His solo built and built\, honking\, screaming\, and refusing to resolve quietly. Dancers went wild\, and the recording became an instant sensation nationwide. Historians now call it the first true rhythm-and-blues saxophone solo ever recorded. Because of that solo\, an entire “honking tenor” style exploded across American bandstands. Saxophonists everywhere started imitating his raw\, physical\, crowd-igniting approach. Jacquet later joined Count Basie’s band\, adding polish to his signature fire. He also became a fixture of Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic tours. Listeners across Southeast Texas knew that voice instantly. In 1958\, he recorded “Chantilly Lace\,” a song built entirely around one side of a phone call. It sold over a million copies within months\, an astonishing debut for any artist. \nThe Beaumont DJ Who Wrote Hits Between Radio Shifts\nRichardson wasn’t just a performer; he wrote songs constantly\, almost compulsively. He penned George Jones’s first number-one country hit\, “White Lightning\,” in 1959. Because his ear caught both rock and roll and country\, he moved easily between genres. Its driving beat and defiant lyrics later inspired punk bands across two generations. The Clash famously covered it\, and so did countless garage acts after them. Fuller moved to Los Angeles chasing stardom\, and for a brief moment\, he truly found it. However\, police found him dead in his own car in July 1966. Officials ruled it suicide\, but few who actually knew him believed that verdict. He was only 23\, with hits still climbing the charts nationwide. His mother never accepted the official explanation for his death. Like Johnny Winter\, Fuller proved Texas garage rock could compete nationally. The Bobby Fuller story still haunts music historians decades later. Baytown gave rock and roll a riff that refuses to fade.
