SUMMARY:Dallas: Sleep at the Granada Theater
DESCRIPTION:Doom-metal pioneers Sleep play the Granada Theater on Lower Greenville on Saturday\, September 12\, with Pink Mountaintops opening. Doors at 7 PM\, tickets starting at $65. \nFormed in California in 1990\, Sleep helped define stoner and doom metal with a sound built on massively downtuned\, distorted guitar riffs and glacially slow tempos\, most famously on 1998’s “Jerusalem” (later reissued as “Dopesmoker”)\, a single 63-minute song that became an underground classic and a foundational text for the entire stoner-doom genre. The band broke up shortly after that album’s contentious label dispute\, with members going on to found Om and reconstituted versions of High on Fire\, before reuniting in 2009 and eventually releasing 2018’s “The Sciences.” Their live shows remain a pilgrimage for doom and stoner-rock fans\, built on volume\, sustained riffs\, and an almost ritualistic pacing. \nBuy Tickets \nThe Granada Theater has anchored Lower Greenville since 1946\, when it opened as an Art Deco movie house on Greenville Avenue. A 1977 renovation added a stage and sound system that turned it into a live-music venue\, and 1981 lobby murals by artist James Franklin still nod to its cinema-era roots. The roughly 1\,100-capacity room runs mostly general admission on the floor with a full bar in back\, under current owner Mike Schoder\, who took over in 2004. Read more on its Texas Music Map venue page. The Granada’s calendar leans toward indie\, rock\, and hip-hop touring acts. \nGet tickets for Sleep at the Granada Theater \nOpener Pink Mountaintops\, the psych-rock side project of Black Mountain’s Stephen McBean\, brings its own heavy\, hazy sound to open a night built for volume over speed. \nDoors open at 7 PM ahead of an 8 PM set; earplugs are worth bringing given Sleep’s reputation for sheer sonic weight. The surrounding area offers a range of dining options for anyone looking to make a full evening out of the show. Fans planning the night out should check current showtimes and any last-minute schedule updates directly with the venue before heading over\, since club schedules can occasionally shift close to the date.
