DESCRIPTION:Today is the birthday of Laura Canales. She would be 72 today. \nLaura Canales of Kingsville\, Texas\, ruled Tejano music before most fans had heard of Selena. From 1983 to 1986\, she swept the Tejano Music Awards for Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year. No one broke that streak for years. Then a teenager from Corpus Christi finally did. Fans called Canales “La Reina de la Onda Tejana\,” the queen of the Tejano wave. She earned every syllable of that title. \nThe Queen Who Ruled Before Selena Ever Took the Stage\nCanales grew up in Kingsville\, a South Texas ranching town near Corpus Christi. She started singing with orquesta bands as a teenager in the 1970s. Her powerful alto cut through horn sections like a knife through leather. Because of that voice\, promoters booked her across every major dance hall in South Texas. She also became one of the first women to front a Tejano orquesta full-time. Audiences packed into venues just to watch her command a stage alone. \nCanales opened doors for women in a genre men had always controlled. Indeed\, before her rise\, female bandleaders barely existed in commercial Tejano music. A young Selena watched Canales dominate the awards circuit and took notes. Their families moved in overlapping South Texas dance-hall circles for years. Selena eventually broke her record\, but Canales paved every inch of that road first. \nLaura Canales died in 2005\, far too soon at just fifty years old. Yet her records still spin at Valley dance halls today. The Laura Canales legacy set the stage for every Tejana who followed. Before Selena\, there was a queen from Kingsville.
