By 1987, Angela Strehli had spent fifteen years building Austin’s blues scene from behind the scenes. She had co-founded Southern Feeling, stage-managed Antone’s Nightclub, and helped launch Antone’s Records. As a result, when she finally stepped into the spotlight with her debut album Soul Shake, the Austin blues community greeted it as a long-overdue celebration. The record showcased the full power of a voice that had been absorbing and refining the blues tradition for decades.
Soul Shake earned Strehli widespread recognition as one of the great Texas blues vocalists. Critics pointed to her emotional directness and her ability to inhabit a song completely. Furthermore, the album revealed the depth of her musical education — from West Texas rhythm and blues through Chicago’s electric sound to the soul music of the Deep South. Consequently, it established her as not just a performer but a keeper of the tradition.
Dreams Come True with Barton and Ball
In 1990, Strehli joined forces with fellow Texas blues singers Lou Ann Barton and Marcia Ball for the album Dreams Come True. The collaboration brought together three of the most distinctive female voices in American blues. Together, they demonstrated that Texas had given rise to a blues tradition entirely its own. Moreover, the album received widespread critical praise and introduced all three artists to a national audience. Therefore, Dreams Come True stands as one of the defining records of the Texas blues renaissance — and Angela Strehli stands at its center.
