Galveston: The Balinese Room

Frank Sinatra played the Balinese Room in Galveston three times a year — a piece of Gulf Coast history unlike anything else on the Texas coast, where gambling, big-band orchestras, and the best food on the Gulf all shared the same pier.

The Balinese Room opened in 1942, built on a pier extending into the Gulf of Mexico at 2107 Seawall Boulevard. The Maceo family — Sam and Rose Maceo, who had turned Galveston into a wide-open city — ran it as the crown jewel of their operation. The setup was deliberate: the building extended 150 feet over the water. When Texas Rangers raided, as they regularly tried to, the length of the pier gave staff time to clear the gambling tables before the law reached the main room. By the time the Rangers arrived, the Balinese was just a supper club.

The talent roster reads like a mid-century American music encyclopedia. Frank Sinatra. Bob Hope. Groucho Marx. Guy Lombardo. Tony Martin. The Glenn Miller Orchestra. Galveston had money — oil money, cotton money, port money — and the Maceos spent it on entertainment that rivaled anything in New York or Las Vegas.

The Texas Rangers finally shut down the gambling operation in 1957, and the Balinese reinvented itself as a straight supper club and concert venue. It kept booking major acts through the 1960s. The building survived on the pier for decades after, weathering Gulf storms until Hurricane Ike destroyed it in 2008.
