Before she was Queen Bey, she was a girl from the Tre.
Houston’s Third Ward sits inside the 610 Loop, southeast of downtown. Roger Wood, author of Down in Houston: Bayou City Blues, called the old Dowling Street corridor “the main street of black Houston.” Blues, gospel, and soul flooded its streets. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born in Houston on September 4, 1981. The Third Ward never left her.
The neighborhood carries its history hard. After World War II, it became the center of Houston’s African-American community. Texas Southern University anchors its northwest edge. The Project Row Houses arts project fills 22 shotgun shacks on Holman Street with paintings and installations. Emancipation Avenue — renamed from Dowling Street in 2017 — cuts the neighborhood’s heart. These streets shaped everything Beyoncé would become.
Third Ward Trill
The nickname says it all. Third Ward Trill. That is not branding. That is a declaration of identity.
When Beyoncé recorded “Formation” in 2016, she opened it with a Houston Creole accent and played the Super Bowl halftime show. The Third Ward was in every bar of it — the gospel undertow, the Houston swagger, the unapologetic pride. She grew up attending church in Houston, performing on the community circuit at age 7, and building the foundation that would eventually sell out stadiums worldwide.
Her mother, Tina Knowles, ran a hair salon nearby. Her father, Mathew Knowles, left his Xerox sales career to manage her group — halving the family’s income and cementing their commitment to her gifts. The Third Ward held all of it: the family, the faith, the ambition, the hustle.
The neighborhood has changed over the years. Its Black population fell from 71 percent in 2010 to 45 persent in 2020 as gentrification accelerated. But the culture endures — in the murals along Emancipation Avenue, in Texas Southern University’s presence, in the memory. And in Beyoncé herself, who carries the Tre in everything she makes.
The Third Ward built a queen.
