In April 1977, Waylon Jennings released “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)” from his album Ol’ Waylon, and overnight the Luckenbach Dance Hall became one of the most famous addresses in country music. Written by Chips Moman and Bobby Emmons, the song’s chorus — “Let’s go to Luckenbach, Texas, with Waylon and Willie and the boys” — turned a tiny Hill Country hamlet near Fredericksburg into a pilgrimage destination for fans of outlaw country.

The Luckenbach general store and dance hall had been a gathering spot since 1849, but Waylon’s song gave it a mythic dimension it had never had before. The song spent two weeks at number one on the country charts and became an anthem for the outlaw country movement, expressing a longing to strip away the glitter of Nashville and return to something real and unadorned. Waylon and Willie Nelson — who had recently released the landmark album Wanted! The Outlaws together — embodied exactly that spirit.

Today the Luckenbach Dance Hall at 412 Luckenbach Town Loop hosts live music nearly every evening, drawing visitors from across the world who come to experience what Waylon described: a place to get back to the basics of love in the Texas Hill Country.
