SEE MORE IN:

Pharr Out Records started as a road trip problem. Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley in the 2010s, friends Isaac Herrera and Zach Myers drove hours outside the region just to buy vinyl. They knew every good store in San Antonio and Houston. Their own backyard had none — at least none focused on the music that actually defined it.

So they built one. Since 2016, the two couples — Isaac and Jade Herrera, Zach and Rebecca Myers — spent years selling records at pop-ups and markets across Texas. Then, on March 25, 2023, they opened a permanent home in the heart of downtown Pharr.

Step through the door and you see the mural first: citrus trees, monarch butterflies, and a towering music-loving figure named Melódico. The image captures what Pharr Out is actually about — a store rooted in this specific landscape, this specific sound.

The inventory proves it. Alongside first pressings of Nirvana’s Nevermind and dub classics by Lee “Scratch” Perry, you’ll find little-known funk sides by Freddy Fender, jazz Tejano from Tortilla Factory, and norteño from Las Potranquitas del Norte, one of the earliest all-female groups in the genre. “The Rio Grande Valley is one of the unknown music capitals in the world,” Isaac Herrera has said. “Once you start digging, you start finding gem after gem.”

El Disco Es Cultura

Pharr Out’s mission goes beyond selling records. The owners want to preserve a musical heritage that borders created, languages shaped, and history nearly buried. They walk first-time buyers through what Tejano is as readily as they discuss pressing history with seasoned collectors. Conjunto, norteño, cumbia, and regional Mexican American music all get the shelf space they deserve here.
