San Antonio gave the world the Escovedo family, and the Escovedos gave the world music at every turn. Alejandro Escovedo was born here in 1951, the ninth of ten children in a household where rhythm was a first language. His older brothers Pete and Coke Escovedo became celebrated percussionists who played alongside Carlos Santana and Tito Puente. His niece Sheila E. would go on to collaborate with Prince and build her own legendary career.

The family lived within San Antonio’s Mexican-American community, where music and cultural identity moved together without separation. Young Alejandro watched his brothers prepare for stages across California and the Latin jazz circuit. He absorbed the lesson early: music was not a pastime but a form of expression that carried history, pride, and meaning beyond words.

From the Alamo City to the American Stage

The Escovedos relocated to California while Alejandro was still a boy, but San Antonio remained the original source. In the 1970s, he found his way into the San Francisco punk scene and performed with The Nuns. He co-founded Rank and File, an early cowpunk act that merged country guitar and punk energy in ways that still sound ahead of their time.

Austin pulled him east in the early 1980s. He arrived carrying both the punk ethic of California and the deep roots of a Mexican-American musical family from South Texas. That combination would define his work for the next four decades.

The True Believers, formed with his brother Javier in 1983, became one of Austin’s most beloved bands. But the story began here, in the streets and culture of San Antonio that made a musical family possible. No Depression would later call Escovedo the Artist of the Decade for the 1990s. The Austin City Limits Hall of Fame honored him in 2012. All of it traces back to a musical dynasty that San Antonio made.
