Luck, Texas isn’t a town so much as a movie set that stuck around: Willie Nelson built it on his ranch in Spicewood in 1985 for the film version of his concept album “Red Headed Stranger,” then liked it so much he kept it standing and built his own home nearby. Since 2012, the ranch has hosted the annual Luck Reunion each March, a gathering that draws Texas songwriters across generations back to Willie’s front porch.
In March 2026, Willis Alan Ramsey joined that lineage, announcing: “I’ll also be on a panel of Texas singer-songwriters that Dallas put together for Willie Nelson’s annual Luck Reunion in Spicewood, TX,” sharing the stage with Kelly Willis, James McMurtry, and Dale Watson. For Ramsey, it closed a loop more than 50 years in the making — he played the original Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic in 1974 at the Texas World Speedway near Bryan-College Station, making his return to a Willie Nelson stage at Luck a full-circle moment in a career defined by exactly that kind of loyalty.
