Deer Tick returns to Austin on Friday, October 16, playing the Historic Scoot Inn on East 4th Street. Doors are at 6 PM, with tickets starting around $25 for a band with deep local roots — they’ve been an Austin City Limits Festival staple for years.
Formed in Providence, Rhode Island in 2004, Deer Tick built its name on raw, whiskey-soaked alt-country and garage rock, fronted by singer-guitarist John McCauley’s ragged, lived-in voice. Albums like War Elephant (2007) and Born on Flag Day (2009) established the band as critical favorites on the Americana circuit, while their reputation for chaotic, go-for-broke live shows — including legendary late-night surprise sets at Newport Folk Festival under the alter-ego Deervana, playing Nirvana covers — turned them into one of the most reliably entertaining acts in indie rock.
The Scoot Inn is one of the oldest continuously operating music venues in Central Texas, and its open-air back patio under strings of lights is exactly the kind of loose, unpretentious setting that suits a band like Deer Tick. The East Austin venue has built its modern booking reputation on exactly this kind of rootsy, road-worn rock and Americana, drawing a crowd that’s as likely to two-step as it is to mosh.
