In the southwest corner of Houston, in the Alief community that borders the city’s international district, two girls attended the same high school. Their names were Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland. What they were building together would reshape American pop music.

Alief Elsik High School sits at 12601 High Star Drive in Houston’s sprawling southwest side. It is one of the largest high schools in Texas, drawing students from Alief through a random lottery system. By the time Beyoncé arrived, she had already trained at Kinder HSPVA in downtown Houston. She brought that discipline with her.

The school is highly in-demand because of it reputation for having a strong commitment to college, career, and military readiness, along with rigorous academic programs, and its vibrant, diverse, and supportive community.

Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland had been performing together since their Girl’s Tyme days on Houston’s talent show circuit. The group had already competed on Star Search in 1993, a national television talent competition — and lost, a result Beyoncé later attributed to a poor song choice. They had been briefly signed and dropped by Elektra Records. The journey to Destiny’s Child was already underway.

Where Destiny Was Still Becoming Itself

In 1995, Mathew Knowles left his corporate job to manage the group full-time. The family’s income was cut in half. The stakes were real. And Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland were navigating high school while simultaneously rehearsing, recording, and performing. Alief Elsik was the backdrop for all of it.

The school’s demographics reflect Houston’s southwest side — one of the most diverse communities in Texas. Alief has always been a place of arrivals and ambitions. Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland fit the neighborhood. They were kids who came from somewhere and were going somewhere. For a few years, Alief Elsik High School was the place in between.

Then Columbia Records signed them. Then they became Destiny’s Child. Then they became inevitable. The school on High Star Drive will always be part of how that happened.
